Unprecedented losses in the attacks with America’s borders brought us all extraordinary pain, but they have also instigated extraordinary faith and resolve in the thoughts and actions of citizens across our great land. In an effort to honor those whose lives were taken, and provide a living tribute to our nation and the resilience and strength of its people. Keep America Beautiful encouraged individuals and organizations throughout the United States to create Liberty Gardens.
Liberty Gardens are special places of natural beauty within communities large and small, rural and urban, reflecting the principles of Freedom and Liberty upon which our country has been built. They provide places of respite from the uncertainty of these times and give reassurance through the continuity and growth found in nature.
Liberty Gardens take on many forms. Some communities choose to plant a perennial garden, some erected a fountain or gazebo, while others planted trees. Keep York Beautiful lead the effort to creating its Liberty Garden. York’s Liberty Garden is located at Kiwanis Lake, York City Park. The design for York’s Liberty Garden was created based on ideas generated from a design charette held in 2002. Local Landscape Architects, Keep York Beautiful board members and members of the community contributed many excellent ideas.
In 2015, the York County Commissioners provided funding to complete the original plan’s landscaping. On September 11, 2015, the Liberty Garden was rededicated. Plans are being made for the 15th Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony of the September 11th attacks.
